Title: Interview with the vampire
It's ten in the morning, and I'm awake.
I'm not only awake, I'm at work. This is just WRONG.
The explanation for all this is I just went from graveyard shift to day shift. It's not that I disliked nights; I very much enjoy nights (AND the 15% shift differential that goes with it). However, I wasn't getting to see Ian as much as I'd like, and he was pouting (you know how boys are). ;) Add that to the fact that my department was looking to move one of the vampires to day shift due to the nature of our workload changing. It was going to be either me or Goose, and better me than that anti-social bastard. (This is not an insult in any way. We LIKE Goose being an anti-social bastard. It's so... him.)
So, I'm now on days. I think I'm going to have to get some sunglasses; they actually expect me to work with the lights on now. Bastards. Mike says he's surprised I haven't burst into flames yet. I'm being a good day-shifter, though: I've already taken a break and I've only been here 30 minutes. See, my theory is that people on day shift don't actually work, as such; they just go to meetings, take smoke breaks, go to lunch, and cluster around each others' workstations to ooh and ahh over Web pages. On nights, we couldn't take lunch or very long breaks, because there was nobody else around to cover for us. Whereas I've never seen anyone on day shift actually work, so my theory is that they don't. I shall be observing the next couple of days to see if my theory is correct. Scientific method, doncha know.
I always knew this place was just one big experiment.
Ahem. Anyway.
I do have to say, though... one nice thing about being back on days is Billy is now working days as well. I missed Billy when I was at tech school. He's my smoking buddy. That is, he takes smoke breaks and I join him outside, and we bitch about work. This is the basis for a tight friendship, you know. He and I worked the night shift for many months together, so we have a rather unique perspective on our jobs. Today has been nice: warm and sunny so far, and a really nice day to be outside goofing off.
"You know what it is?" Billy asked, taking a drag off his cigarette and exhaling the smoke.I looked up from where I was crouched on the edge of the grass, pulling up blades idly and tossing them to the breeze. "What?" I asked.
"I need to get laid, man. Laid PROPERLY." He shook his head in dismay as I laughed.
"They need to quit hiring so many cute, straight boys," I said. Billy nodded vigorously.
"Damn skippy they do. It's freaking me out, man. All these cute boys running around campus, and they've all got girlfriends." He sighed and took another drag from his cigarette.
"Truly a damn shame... Hey, let's go get some Starbuck's, dude."
"Right on." We wandered off to the campus coffee shop.
This is a typical conversation on a typical day at work when Billy and I are working together. There are times when I really do love my job, even if I am forced to work while the sun is up.
