Title: Post-Thanksgiving recovery
Music du jour: Nick Warren, 008 Brazil: Global Underground
Ahhh... buffalo steak. I'm beginning to really dig Thanksgiving. Yes, we had steak for Thanksgiving dinner. Mind you, we had turkey too, but steak was the main thing. Organic bison from Kansas. Mmm mmm good. Bill made his momma's famous cornbread dressing, Cynthia did up the marinade for the steaks (I'm going to marry her just for the marinade; it was that good), and Ian slung hash for all the rest of it. I, being totally inept in the kitchen, tooled around cleaning a bit (until the vacuum cleaner choked on a hairball and died -- oops) and tried to keep the animals and humans entertained. Despite having no living room floor (it's bare plywood right now) and having to eat standing up and sitting on various bits of furniture, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. A few of us took turns calling our parents and other friends and relations, since we're all homeless geeks. And a good time was had by all.
So now I'm back at work for the first time in a week. It's nice not having to actually show up here for six days or so. I like it. I liked being off so much that I kinda had to force myself to work. So I got back in the groove by deleting MP3 files from a luser's home directory. Two gigs worth, even. Damn. I should have grabbed them for myself, but alas, I have no local storage any more, and the SunRay server is off-limits to us. It's not off-limits because we like it that way; it's off-limits because they won't give us root. Or any other kind of access, for that matter. Bastard shits. No, I DON'T feel like hacking root on the server, so shaddap. :)
Okay, okay, okay. Job news. Lockheed-Martin offered me a Unix sysadmin job at their Boulder R&D facility adminning an Irix lab. The job is supporting the SBIRS project (Space Based Infrared System). It sounds like it's going to be good... they're offering me a little more than I'm making now, plus a signing bonus. I may even have a shot at running the lab one day. The clincher, though, wasn't the salary or even the bonus. It was this.
I will have an office.
Like, a REAL office. One with walls all the way to the ceiling and everything. Granted, I'll have to share it with another geek, but I can handle that. Anything is better than this bullpen I'm in now. God... an office. I'm already having wet dreams. Y'all just don't know.
In other news, I am driving to Emporia tomorrow to take Cynthia home, since her ride bailed on her. It's a long story, but basically her friend wasn't having any fun (read: he didn't get laid while in Denver) and wanted to go home Friday afternoon. Neither I nor Cynthia was having any of it, so I told her I'd drive her home. He found this out and kind of left in a huff. It's a shame, but I don't see what I could have done to make him happy, other than corral a supple young boy from one of the gay clubs and gotten him drunk. And that's all I'm saying about that. Heh.
So I may not be updating for a couple of days (like that's new), but it's only because I'll be in a techno wasteland. Although I will be helping Cynthia set up her new computer, so maybe we'll be online at some point.
Off I go to get a late supper. Hope all you Americans had a good Thanksgiving, and the rest of you had a good Thursday. I'm going to eat leftover steak now.
